Health Care

I talked to my “health coach” a couple of weeks ago. This is required periodically by my health insurance carrier, and my employer. I think the company and their intent is a joke, but sadly I’m obligated to participate. The first question they always ask is whether or not I’m taking cholesterol or diabetes medication. I swear this company is bank rolled by big pharmaceutical. Before we hung up, they asked me if I needed any help with anything, and I requested to talk to a nutritionist. I want to make sure my efforts to go vegetarian include a proper […]

On Writing

This has been a great day!  We didn’t do anything out of the ordinary.  We went out for breakfast, then to our favorite coffee shop to do some writing.  I always say I’m going there to write, but the truth is I never do.  The place is noisy and distracting, and I spend more time watching people (which I love to do) than writing.  I think I just like to go there because it’s a different group of people than I am around all week.  No one is dressed in a suite, there are no demanding schedules, and I am […]

St. Mary’s Bookstore

I went to St. Mary’s Bookstore this morning after breakfast. I love walking around that store looking at all the statues and rosaries.  And of course I picked up a few things while I was there. I bought a small crucifix for my bedroom, and one for my daughter’s dorm room.  It’s been a long time since I had a crucifix hanging in my room, but it feels like it’s time again.  I have one wall with a Buddha and mala beads.  My dresser has a hand drum and a Native American flute.  The crucifix should fit right in with the […]

An Open Letter to my Daughter

As high school graduation nears, I spend a lot of time thinking about who you are and your future. I have no doubts that you will find your way in this world, much quicker than I did. I see a confidence in you that amazes me, and gives me comfort that you will be who you are meant to be, and will live the life that you have chosen. I do worry that you are not aware of all your options. You have the brains, confidence, and attitude to be anything you want to be. Over the past couple of […]

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

I’m a big fan of keeping things in my life natural and toxic free, especially cleaning products. I don’t like filling my home with toxic chemicals, and you can make cleaning products yourself for much less than commercial products. This week I found a recipe to make your own dishwasher detergent, and I had to try it. I’ve run a few loads through the dishwasher, and I’m much impressed. My dishes are clean, and the glassware is spot free! To make your own dishwasher detergent, combine the following ingredients: 1 cup washing soda 1 cup borax ½ cup sea salt […]
